Analysis of artifacts 2
I will now be analysing the music video for Green Light by Lorde.
My interpretation of this song is that Lorde is singing about her struggle to move on from a relationship, and that she is looking for the 'Green light' to leave the feelings behind.
The video begins with the singer, Lorde, getting really up close to the camera, with a close-up shot off her head taking up most of the frame as she sings the first verse of the song. This is so that the audience isn't distracted by anything else in the video, and their attention is solely on Lorde herself and the lyrics she is singing. The lyrics themselves have such impact, such as "I know about what you did and I want to scream the truth" as she looks directly to the camera, and thus the audience takes on the position of the person she is angry with. This is a really successful technique at engaging the audience and I think I could do something very similar with my own video.
Throughout the video, we are entirely looking through Lorde's point of view, whether she is at a party, alone in the streets, screaming out of a taxi in the night etc. and this gives the video a very "coming of age" quality, as if she is really growing up and coming into her own in this video. She smiles to herself as she sings, she dances in the streets like nobody is watching and looks completely free, which juxtaposes against the lyrics "Oh I wish I could get my things and just let go, I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it" referring to her being unable to get over her past relationship and move on. It's as if this video is a fantasy of Lorde's, wanting to be free and dance without a care in the world, but she is currently unable to because she is so unhappy from her broken relationship.
Something that I really enjoy with this video on a technical and editing standpoint, is the use of transitions between certain shots. Often Lorde will thrash her hair around, and this will cut to many other shots of her doing the same thing in different scenes. This creates a visual link that is easy for the viewer to follow, and it's something I will remember when it comes to my own video.
I really enjoy watching this music video, as it gives me such a happy and warm feelings by the end of it, like I'm the only person in the world with Lorde. She takes you on such a journey and I love going with her.
